THIRTEEN
Thick snow had fallen overnight, and the village was covered in a blanket of dense whiteness. Police cars were haphazardly parked in the market square, their hazard lights flashing in the dense fog. The New Year had gone rapidly downhill shortly after the revellers had arrived back at their homes at one oâclock on New Yearâs morning. Call after each desperate call had been made to the Butteroak police station. A string of messy burglaries had been carried out and this time some unbelievably valuable items had been taken. Nowhere had been left untouched. Every person who had attended the party at the Big Red House was a victim of burglary or an attempted burglary and frantically calling insurance companies to arrange replacements for the broken windows and doors in their frozen homes.
Floxy and Phantom were on their way to the book shop, early morning. The police had informed Willow of her break-in, and she, in turn, had rung Floxy, begging her to attend on her behalf. She was too far away and not able to travel. With a severe snowstorm of blizzard proportion blowing in, and a biting, north-easterly wind combined with heavy fog, the visibility was poor and the air, bitter.
âWillow is thankful I thought ahead and took her most valuable items away. They are safely stashed in your secure floor safe. Her first edition books are worth a small fortune. She is emailing me a full stock list so we can work out what has been taken.â
âIs she insured for everything?â
âYes, special insurance, thank goodness. Under the circumstances, Iâm glad I wasnât there. This could so easily have been a lot worse if any of us had been caught up in it all. Maybe the curse would have played out and some of the villagers could be corpses today.â
âNot you, Floxy - Frankie told me all about it. You are trained in the martial arts stuff and everything. The only person left at the village would have been the vicar, we should go there and check on him,â Phantom urged. âThank goodness they were all safe at our place.â
âI wasnât worried about me, Iâm glad Albus wasnât at the book shop. The vicar isnât there, I forgot to say. When I invited him to the party yesterday, he said he wasnât around, he wouldn't be back in the village for a couple of days. As nobody is attending church right now, heâd taken the opportunity to go and spend time with his parents for a week. He wished us all a safe and prosperous New Year. On the other hand, perhaps the thieves got wind the village was totally empty and took the opportunity to strike. Did you say⦠our place?â
âItâs your home too. Oh, okay, he isnât there, I didnât realise. Weâll just make sure the church is locked up anyway and no windows are broken there or anything.â
Floxy tried to rub the stubborn ice away from the passenger window. Their place. Her heart warmed at Phantomâs generosity.
